Director Statement
“A Palette of Rich Colours” is an experimental short film with a strong narrative core, bringing together two iconic women from world literature (Juliet from Romeo and Juliet and Layli from Layli and Majnun) and inviting them to meet for the first time. In this work, I bring them together to reclaim their narratives, away from the male authors who shaped their destinies. I wanted to imagine what they would say to each other if they could finally speak from their own point of view, not as symbols of tragic love, but as women with agency, memory, and desire.

Their dialogue appears through movement only. The film uses modern dance grounded in classical gestures, allowing their bodies to carry the emotional weight of the stories. A storyteller becomes the third character in the film, not to interpret for them, but to echo their reflections and guide the audience gently into their inner world. The film unfolds in layers spoken, danced, remembered and creates a space where these two mythological heroines reclaim their voices together.

As a director and multidisciplinary artist, I have often returned to literature in my projects. Both classical and modern stories shape how I understand love, loss, and the body. My recent works focused on misplacement, love stories, and people displaced by conflict, those who must leave their homelands and the ones they love behind. This new film continues that journey, but through a feminist lens. It reflects my own experience as an immigrant artist, navigating between cultures, languages, and histories.

With this film, I hope to give these two heroines a moment where they can reclaim their stories and see themselves through each other’s eyes.
